Altering crop management practices to promote pollinators

نویسندگان

چکیده

Agricultural intensification, or the increase in crop production per unit of input land area to meet needs a growing population, has resulted landscape dominated by large scale monoculture cropping. Pollinators, specifically, are impacted lack diverse floral and habitat resources associated with this type farming. Agriculture must develop practices that diversify availability flowering support these populations. In chapter, we summarize available literature on how space, i.e., within field, orchard, pasture, can be more effectively managed sustain pollinator We report various spatial temporal approaches context cropping systems (row crops, specialty perennial orchards, forage pasture systems). Collectively, represent opportunities re-introduce diversity into agricultural benefit pollinators.

From research to action: enhancing crop yield through wild pollinators

© The Ecological Society of America www.frontiersinecology.org F covers more than 35% of Earth’s ice-free terrestrial area, and agriculture is expanding and intensifying in many regions to meet the growing demands of human populations (FAO 2013). This trend threatens biodiversity and the ecosystem services on which agriculture depends, including crop pollination (Garibaldi et al. 2011a). Indeed...

Effects of Soil and Crop Management Practices on Soil Quality

Developing the concept of soil quality may help identify the soil and crop management practices required for environmentally, socially, and economically sustainable agriculture. Objectives of this paper are (1) to review current efforts to define soil quality, (2) to discuss factors and processes which influence soil quality, (3) to identify, soil and crop management practices that affect proce...

Functional group diversity of bee pollinators increases crop yield.

Niche complementarity is a commonly invoked mechanism underlying the positive relationship between biodiversity and ecosystem functioning, but little empirical evidence exists for complementarity among pollinator species. This study related differences in three functional traits of pollinating bees (flower height preference, daily time of flower visitation and within-flower behaviour) to the se...

Projected climate change threatens pollinators and crop production in Brazil

Animal pollination can impact food security since many crops depend on pollinators to produce fruits and seeds. However, the effects of projected climate change on crop pollinators and therefore on crop production are still unclear, especially for wild pollinators and aggregate community responses. Using species distributional modeling, we assessed the effects of climate change on the geographi...

Supporting crop pollinators with floral resources: network-based phenological matching

The production of diverse and affordable agricultural crop species depends on pollination services provided by bees. Indeed, the proportion of pollinator-dependent crops is increasing globally. Agriculture relies heavily on the domesticated honeybee; the services provided by this single species are under threat and becoming increasingly costly. Importantly, the free pollination services provide...
